As a new single mom, solo camping with my son was initially daunting. I had always camped with my ex-husband, which provided a sense of security. To prove my capabilities, I pushed myself out of my comfort zone to rediscover the activities I cherished. This trip marked our first camping excursion alone. Each step - booking sites and buying supplies - boosted my confidence, despite imposter syndrome creeping in. I almost canceled the morning we left. Could I handle setting up camp and keeping us safe alone? I persevered and am grateful I did.

We spent the first night in Watkins Glen State Park on a private, wooded site. I assembled the tent, hung the hammock, and built a fire while my 5-year-old played. As I share these stories, the emotional journey starting over after 24 years hits me. But this trip also represents healing and making new memories.
We cooked over the campfire, explored the beautiful grounds, and turned in early. The next morning, we were up at sunrise to beat the crowds on the gorge trail. With the stunning rock walls all to ourselves, we took our time enjoying the peaceful scenery and rushing water. The lush environment and cavern-like paths delighted my son. Rediscovering my outdoor capabilities with him by my side filled me with pride.

After Watkins Glen, we broke our camp down and continued our road trip to hike Ricketts Glen waterfalls and camp at a family-owned campground near Ricketts Glen State Park. Though the Ricketts Glen waterfall trail was difficult, with uneven steps and thick roots, my son persevered. I watched his confidence build tackling each obstacle. My favorite moment was seeing his joy dropping leaves and sticks down the top of a towering waterfall. These simple connections with nature are precious.
The wooded falls made the strenuous downhill hike worthwhile. My son clambered over embankments and rocks like a pro. Discovering all 21 waterfalls kept us motivated during the tough ascent back. Though rigorous, the stunning scenery delivered an unforgettable adventure.

The private campground exceeded expectations with nature paths, a lake stocked with fish, ducks, and ducklings, and a variety of paddle boats. My son loved night fishing and catching bass. We enjoyed campfire foil meals under the stars. The clean sites and friendly owners made us feel secure and relaxed. In the morning, we cooked cinnamon rolls over the fire before my son completed a camp-wide QR code treasure hunt to earn prizes.
These trips have shown my son and I can adapt together, pushing our limits while making treasured memories. Each accomplishment, from assembling camp to hiking waterfalls, boosts my confidence as a solo parent.
Though once intimidating, I now cherish planning these trips that reinforce life’s simple joys.
